If Dr. William F. Proffitt, Jr of Proffitt Dentistry advises you of a cavity in your smile, taking action is critical. The first step is understanding what tooth decay is and how it affects oral health. When you work with our team in Maryville, Tennessee, we will provide you with all the information and services you need to reduce the potential for cavities in the first place. If they develop, then immediate care is encouraged–and often comes in the form of white cavity fillings.
Dental tooth decay, also referred to by some as dental caries or cavities, is a hole in the tooth that can cause damage to the structure of your teeth. It occurs when bacteria in plaque produce acid that wears down the enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth. If left undiagnosed and unaddressed with the help of a dentist, tooth decay can progress and lead to discomfort, infection, and even substantial tooth loss.
The most common cause of cavities or decay is poor oral hygiene. This includes not brushing your teeth regularly and not flossing. Consuming sugary foods and drinks also contributes to the development of tooth decay as the bacteria in plaque use sugar as fuel to produce acid.
Other factors that can increase your risk of developing cavities include:
Our team focuses on mercury-free fillings, using a composite resin material instead that is safer and more aesthetic. These white cavity fillings address tooth decay while ensuring a reliable, biocompatible, and effective solution to formed cavities.
We invite you to call our office at (865) 432-0804 to request an upcoming visit at 811 High Street in Maryville, TN.
We may recommend the placement of a white, composite resin dental filling to keep the area of decay from becoming larger and impacting the smile further.
