A healthy grin boosts your confidence and makes you approachable, improving success in your professional, social, and personal lives.
Unfortunately, a healthy, confident grin doesn’t come by luck — you have to work for it. Every day, you must brush and floss your teeth at home. You must visit your dentist every six months for a professional exam and cleaning. When you stick to this oral care regimen, you can be sure your smile will stay as healthy as it can be for life.
Due for a dental appointment in Maryville, Tennessee? Please schedule an appointment with Proffitt Dentistry for a preventive dental cleaning (dental prophylaxis or “prophy”).
We recommend dental cleanings at least twice a year. However, if you are at risk of cavities and gum disease, you should increase the frequency to three to four times yearly. All dental cleanings start with a dental exam with Dr. William Proffitt to assess your mouth for signs of cavities, gum disease, worn-out dental work, and other problems. We also take digital X-rays to unearth issues like cysts, problematic wisdom teeth, bone loss, etc.
After the dental exam, we’ll take time to explain the findings, possible care (if any) and answer all your questions about your oral health. We make the discussion “more convincing” by showing you X-ray images and photos as needed of your mouth.
After the initial exam, the next step is usually a hygiene visit. Our dental hygienist uses specialized instruments to eliminate plaque and tartar from areas missed by brushing and flossing. Next, we polish and floss your teeth to remove surface stains for a radiant smile. Before you leave, we’ll recommend fluoride care if you are at risk of tooth decay, answer questions, and make recommendations for best results with your home care.
Though suppressed immunity and certain medical conditions put you at risk of gum disease, plaque buildup is the main culprit. This thin film of bacteria forms when food debris mixes with saliva and harmful bacteria. Good oral hygiene can eliminate most of the plaque buildup, but only professional cleaning can sufficiently eliminate hardened plaque (tartar).
Dental cleanings are the cornerstone of a healthy smile. Their benefits include:
