Understanding the Process of Getting Dental Implants

It’s never easy to lose permanent teeth, but sometimes it’s inevitable. An unforeseen accident could result in knocked-out teeth, or you may lose teeth due to gum disease. Whatever the reason for tooth loss, dental implants from Proffitt Dentistry in Maryville, Tennessee, offer a viable solution to restoring your smile. The process of getting dental implants takes longer than other restorative procedures, but the exceptional results make this process worthwhile.

Process of Getting Dental Implants

Unlike other restorative procedures that sit on your gums, implants are inserted into your gums to become a permanent part of your bone system, giving your prosthetics the stability and support of natural teeth. After evaluating your teeth and gums and determining that you’re a good candidate for implants, Dr. William Proffitt will outline a plan for your procedure and schedule an appointment to begin your implant surgery.

Implants consist of three parts: a titanium rod (implant), an abutment, and your restoration, which may be a dental crown, bridge, or dentures, depending on your needs. Getting implants is basically a three-step process that involves the following:

  • Implant placement – Through dental surgery, Dr. Proffitt will insert the implant into your jaw to replace your missing tooth root. We’ll then wait three to six months for the implant to fuse with your jawbone and heal. Once the implant has been integrated into your bone system, it will become a permanent foundation for your replacement teeth
  • Addition of Abutment – The abutment is a connective post between your implant and restoration. It’s attached to the implant and given time to heal before proceeding with step three
  • Placement of Restoration – Your restoration will be permanently attached to the abutment to replace your missing tooth. This completes your procedure. Dr. Proffitt will have customized restorations made for your use to give you a smile that’s functional, natural-looking, and esthetically pleasing
