Extractions

What are some reasons for needing tooth extractions?

Tooth extractions are sometimes a necessary solution for specific dental issues. Patients needing tooth extractions will be advised by Dr. William F. Proffitt of Proffitt Dentistry in Maryville, Tennessee, about the aftercare procedure, which prevents problems such as infection and dry sockets.

Let’s determine the primary reasons for tooth extractions and how to care for the smile afterward.

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

  • Severe tooth decay. If a tooth is extensively decayed, it may not be restorable, and therefore an extraction may be recommended
  • Impacted tooth. When a tooth fails to erupt fully due to impaction, it can lead to discomfort, swelling, and infection. In this situation, extracting the impacted tooth is often the best option
  • Overcrowding. Orthodontics may require some teeth to be removed to make enough room for other teeth to move freely into their correct positions
  • Infection/abscesses. These are situations where bacteria have infiltrated the gums and underlying bone and caused infection or inflammation. Extracting the tooth can be the quickest way to relieve these symptoms and help restore the patient’s oral health
  • Trauma. A knocked-out tooth or a fractured root may require an extraction to remove any remaining fragments of a tooth in the area and prevent further damage from occurring
  • Disease. Gum disease may require teeth to be extracted to stop its progression

How to prevent dry socket

A dry socket is a dental condition that can occur with extractions and become highly problematic. It results from a blood clot not forming in the tooth socket, leading to intense discomfort. To prevent this condition, it is essential to avoid drinking from a straw, which can dislodge the forming clot. Also, patients can reduce their risk of dry sockets by avoiding cigarettes, spitting, swishing with mouthwash, and excessive activity for a few days following an extraction.
